Dr. Jabez Campfield (1737-1821), a surgeon in Captain Oliver Spencer's Regiment, accompanied Major General John Sullivan's Expedition against the Indians into Western Pennsylvania and New York, May 23-October 2, 1779. Dr. Campfield, born in Newark, and a graduate of the College of New Jersey (now Princeton, 1759), studied medicine with Dr. William Burnet, and entered the army as Senior Surgeon on Dr. Burnet's staff.
